ONE-OF-A-KIND JANET THE GANNET TO LAND AT EAA AIRVENTURE

Posted on June 21, 2013 by Scott Smith

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ONE-OF-A-KINDJANET THE GANNET TO LAND AT

EAA AIRVENTURE

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wis. – (June 21, 2013) – The world’s only flying prototype of a Fairey Gannet T5, Janet the Gannet, will be flying to EAA AirVentureon opening day Monday, July 29. It will be on display at Phillips 66 Plaza throughout the rest of the week. AirVenture attendees are invited to see this historic piece of aviation history.

Janet is a Cold War-era Royal Navy plane designed for anti-submarine operations. The aircraft, which first flew in 1954, is powered by an Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba turboprop engine which turns two contra-rotating four-blade props.

Designed by Fairey Aviation UK, Janet was built as the first dual control T2 Gannet prototype in the world, and it is the only surviving prototype of any flying historic military aircraft. It is also the oldest turboprop airplane still flying. Surprisingly, Janetonly has 1,500 hours of logged operations.

Long-range plans call for the airplane to be the flying centerpiece of a museum of flight and education center in New Richmond, Wis.

Uncrating and Field Assembly of a P-47

Posted on May 1, 2013 by Scott Smith

This takes a while but is a neat video. On a side note I have a VCR tape of the original B24 training film.  That’s another long slow but very interesting film.

Save this one for a rainy day viewing (40 minutes).

This truly remarkable step-by-step training film shows how a ground support crew of fifty men could assemble a P-47 fighter in a farm field using nothing more than muscle, unpowered hand tools, and pieces of the shipping crate it came in. We’re talking nothing more than hammers, wrenches and bicycle pumps. You’ll get a unique look at the inner workings of the Big Jug as it is bolted together. Then a pilot jumps in and flies it away! A must see for P-47 fans and shade tree mechanics alike.
