EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022 Notice includes important procedure updates for pilots flying to Oshkosh

Document is required reading for Oshkosh-bound pilots

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — (May 25, 2022) — There are several important Federal Aviation Administration-approved changes in the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022 Notice (commonly referred to as the Oshkosh NOTAM), featuring arrival and departure procedures for the Experimental Aircraft Association’s 69th fly-in convention on July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. These changes are based on pilot feedback and FAA review of arrival procedure recommendations.

The document is in effect from noon CDT on Thursday, July 21, until 6 a.m. CDT on Monday, August 1, and outlines procedures for the many types of aircraft that fly to Oshkosh for the event, as well as aircraft that land at nearby airports. The Notice was designed by the FAA to assist pilots in their EAA AirVenture flight planning. It is now known as the Oshkosh Notice instead of a NOTAM because of a changed FAA internal procedure.

Some of the 2022 changes include:

  • The document is now officially called a Notice by the FAA, rather than a NOTAM.
  • Two VORs have been decommissioned (RFD and MBL).
  • Several IFR routings have been changed.
  • Aircraft camping is no longer allowed at Appleton International Airport (ATW).
  • Miscellaneous editorial updates.

The ATC-assignable transition points approaching Oshkosh from the west that will ease holding and congestion will again be in effect in 2022. These points are at Endeavor Bridge, Puckaway Lake, and Green Lake. They will be announced on the arrival ATIS when ATC activates them at times of highest traffic flows

“The most essential information for any pilot flying to Oshkosh involves reading and thoroughly understanding the 2022 AirVenture Notice to ensure safe operations on arrival and departure,” said Sean Elliott, EAA’s vice president of advocacy and safety. “Although the designation may have been changed by the FAA, the document still states the official requirements and expectations for pilots. We also urge all pilots to log appropriate cross-country time prior to their trip to Oshkosh so they have the proficiency and confidence to fly safely.”

EAA is also hosting a webinar on June 22 at 7 p.m. regarding flying to AirVenture 2022 and changes in this year’s Notice. Pilots are encouraged to participate to build their knowledge prior to their flights to Oshkosh.

Early commitments include U.S. Air Force 75th anniversary aircraft

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — (May 13, 2022) — A long list of current military aircraft are among the early commitments to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022, including many arriving to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force this year. The 69th edition of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s fly-in convention is July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

“Displays and aerial performances of current military aircraft are always among the most popular parts of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh each year, for aviation enthusiasts and the public,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “This is just the start, as we expect to list of military aircraft to grow as we approach AirVenture’s opening day, especially in support of the Air Force’s 75th anniversary in 2022.”

The current military aircraft listed, from the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army, are those on ground display, with some performing during the daily air shows as well. They include:

  • C-5 Galaxy
  • C-17 Globemaster III
  • F-16 Fighting Falcon
  • KC-46 Pegasus
  • HH-60 Pavehawk
  • AH-64 Apache
  • UH-60 Blackhawk
  • MH-47 Chinook
  • AH-6 Little Bird
  • T-38 Talon

Many more military aircraft, for both ground display and aerial demonstrations, are expected to be added to this list in the coming weeks, with announcements coming as confirmations are finalized.

Champions, presidents, space flight: All part of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022 evening programs

Everything from homebuilts to space flight featured during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022 evening programs

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — (April 8, 2022) — Aviation anniversaries and notable personalities are part of the lineup as the nightly Theater in the Woods evening programs bring the world of aviation to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022. The 69th edition of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s fly-in convention is July 25-31 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

This year’s schedule of evening programs includes interests from homebuilt aircraft to spaceflight. The nightly programs give AirVenture attendees the opportunity to hear directly from the history makers and the innovators.

“The format of the evening Theater in the Woods presentations brings out not only the highlights, but the fascinating background stories from aviators who were there,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “Spending an evening at Theater in the Woods is an Oshkosh tradition that creates countless memories for those in the audience and great stories that they take back home.”

This year’s major highlights include:

  • Sunday, July 24: An Evening with Champions – The traditional AirVenture “pregame show,” with aviation personalities in an evening of storytelling
  • Monday, July 25: Van’s RV 50th anniversary – The world’s most popular kit aircraft celebrates a half century with more than 11,000 built
  • Tuesday, July 26: Flying the Presidents – Experiences from the pilot’s seat in Air Force One, Marine One, and other aircraft
  • Wednesday, July 27: Unusual Attitudes: Women Legends of Aerobatics – Air show legends and champion aerobatic pilots discuss flying on the edge
  • Thursday, July 28: Young Eagles 30th anniversary/Pilots of Top Gun – Commemorate the largest youth aviation education program ever created, then hear from the people who were the inspiration for the iconic film
  • Friday, July 29: The Next Bold Step: The Future of Space and Beyond – Representatives from NASA and Space X talk about what’s next as we explore the solar system
  • Saturday, July 30: U.S. Air Force 75th anniversary – The legacy and the future of America’s aviation branch with top USAF officials present

Additional events and guests will be announced as they are finalized. All evening programs begin at 7 p.m., except on July 27 and 30, which begin at 6:30 p.m. due to the night air shows on those dates. Theater in the Woods programming is presented by M&M’S.
