EAA AirVenture Oshkosh commemorates 30 years of women flying combat aircraft during EAA WomenVenture on July 26

Special programming, exhibits, and more included throughout week

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — (June 9, 2023) — Celebrating women advancing in aviation, including 30 years of flying active-duty combat aircraft, will be part of EAA WomenVenture on July 26 during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. The 70th edition of the Experimental Aircraft Association’s fly-in convention is July 24-30 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

EAA WomenVenture has become an annual gathering point for women involved in aviation, from the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II to teenagers involved in EAA’s GirlVenture day camp that week. The programs are design to encourage and inspire women who want to pursue their dreams of flight.

“What we’ve seen over the 15-plus years of EAA WomenVenture is that it has become an unforgettable annual reunion of all women engaged in aviation,” said Margaret Viola, an EAA-member pilot who is the volunteer chair of the event. “We are inspired by those who came before us and, in turn, are enthused to share the world of flight with others who want to become part of it. It’s a celebration that happens in a unique way at Oshkosh.”

Events will be held all week, with an emphasis on July 26 activities, including commemoration of 30 years of women flying combat missions in the U.S. military. Programs during the week include:

  • All week: EAA WomenVenture Center, located at Aviation Gateway Park, features exhibitors and events that support women in aviation.
  • Monday, July 24: Ice Cream Social, sponsored by Endeavor Air (SOLD OUT)
  • Wednesday, July 26:
    • Annual WomenVenture group photo, 11 a.m., Boeing Plaza
    • Power Lunch, Theater in the Woods (SOLD OUT), with keynote speaker Michelle “Mace” Curran, author and former U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds pilot, presenting Upside Down Dreams.
    • Evening program, Theater in the Woods, 6:30 p.m., with pioneering women military pilots Jeannie Leavitt, Sharon Preszler, and Martha McSally, plus more women pilots who have served in the U.S. armed forces.
  • Thursday, July 27: Female aviation authors featured all day at EAA WomenVenture Center.
  • July 26-29: Evening activities hosted by exhibitors on WomenVenture Center patio.

More information is available at EAA.org/WomenVenture, including how to register for this year’s free commemorative WomenVenture T-shirt, designed by EAA member Leticia Williamson.

EAA WomenVenture is present by The Boeing Company, with additional support from Endeavor Air, General Aviation Manufacturers Association, The Ninety-Nines, Piedmont Airlines, United Airlines, University of North Dakota Aerospace, U.S. Air Force, and Women in Aviation International.

Flying Musicians 2023 Solo Scholarship Recipient

Posted on May 30, 2023 by Scott Smith
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 25, 2023 — Fort Worth, TX:  The Flying Musicians Association (FMA) is proud to announce the selection of our sixteenth overall scholarship recipient of the FMA Solo program: Justin Duval from San Jose, California. Justin will begin flight training at AeroDynamic Aviation in San Jose at the Reid-Hillview Airport of Santa Clara County (KRHV)

Justin has the desire, passion, drive, and initiative to succeed in so many areas. His attention to detail and pursuit of all things aviation and music has stood him apart from many. His musical achievements have led to many opportunities like Carnegie Hall and the Oakland California Temple to perform pieces ranging from Sonatas to traditional Chinese music. Now we will all witness his growth in aviation. “Much like music, aviation has been a constant obsession of mine, as I aspire to be a commercial airline pilot.”– Justin Duval

Eighty-seven outstanding nominations were received from across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The FMA board had to choose from 5 finalists. They were overwhelmed with the level of talent and passion. “As typical all five are well qualified and talented. The decision is not easy.” – Dr. Ian Blair Fries “Again, terribly hard choices. Each nominee, every one of them, would be a good candidate.” – Tim Kern, MBA, CAM “Wow, all worthy finalists, what a hard choice!” – Louise Vickerman, principal harpist Utah Symphony. “If only we had the resources to fund more scholarships, I would have been delighted to select all five finalists!” – Prof. H. Paul Shuch “My heart is saddened knowing there are so many worthy individuals that we are unable to assist. We must do a better job raising funds.” – John Zapp co-founder and President of FMA

John Zapp, co-founder and President of FMA, said, “The great news is that FMA has grown by eighty-seven very talented, motivated, and passionate student musicians. They will all make excellent members of our community.”

The FMA Solo Scholarships are made possible by our sponsors, donors, and members donating their time and talents. We also raise funds through activities such as HangarJAMs and music at corporate functions.  In addition, we look forward to support from across the aviation and music communities.

Follow Justin as he blogs about his learn to fly journey. Visit FMAsolo.org to congratulate and add your words of encouragement and wisdom.

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023 FAA Notice

Posted on May 10, 2023 by Scott Smith

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023 Notice includes important procedure updates for pilots flying to Oshkosh

Document is required reading for Oshkosh-bound pilots

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — (May 10, 2023) — There are several important Federal Aviation Administration-approved changes in the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2023 Notice (commonly referred to as the Oshkosh NOTAM), featuring arrival and departure procedures for the Experimental Aircraft Association’s 70th fly-in convention on July 24-30 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. These changes are based on pilot feedback and FAA review of arrival procedure recommendations.

The document is in effect from noon CDT on Thursday, July 20, until noon CDT on Monday, July 31, and outlines procedures for the many types of aircraft that fly to Oshkosh for the event, as well as aircraft that land at nearby airports. The Notice was designed by the FAA to assist pilots in their EAA AirVenture flight planning. It is now known as the Oshkosh Notice instead of a NOTAM because of a changed FAA internal procedure.

Some of the 2023 changes include:

  • A change in the AirVenture ultralight pattern at Wittman Regional Airport.
  • Guidance regarding Oshkosh aircraft parking areas, including North 40/South 40 designation.
  • Elimination of the Fond du Lac diversion procedure.
  • The start time of the daily air shows has been changed from 2:30 to 2:15 p.m. CDT.
  • The Notice and its procedures are effective through noon CDT on Monday, July 31.

The ATC-assignable transition points approaching Oshkosh from the west that will ease holding and congestion will again be in effect in 2023. These points are at Endeavor Bridge, Puckaway Lake, and Green Lake. They will be announced on the arrival ATIS when ATC activates them at times of highest traffic flows.

“The most essential information for any pilot flying to Oshkosh involves reading and thoroughly understanding the 2023 AirVenture Notice to ensure safe operations on arrival and departure,” said Sean Elliott, EAA’s vice president of advocacy and safety. “This FAA Notice document states the official requirements and expectations for pilots. We also urge all pilots to log appropriate cross-country time prior to their trip to Oshkosh so they have the proficiency and confidence to fly safely.”

EAA is also hosting a webinar on June 14 at 7 p.m. regarding flying to AirVenture 2023 and changes in this year’s Notice. Pilots are encouraged to participate to build their knowledge prior to their flights to Oshkosh.

Pilots can download a digital version of the Notice at EAA.org/NOTAM, or order a free printed copy via that website or by calling EAA Membership Services at 800-564-6322.
