EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — (February 27, 2019) — EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, long known for showcasing the latest flight technology, welcomes cutting edge innovation to this year’s event with the addition of the Urban Air Mobility Showcase as part of the “World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration.” The showcase is part of Aviation Gateway Park at the 67th annual Experimental Aircraft Association fly-in convention, to be held July 22-28 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.

Sponsored by TransportUP – The Latest News for Urban Aviation, EAA’s Urban Air Mobility Showcase will highlight autonomous air vehicles, hover bikes, personal air vehicles and leader VTOLs (Vertical Takeoff and Landing vehicles). There are also scheduled speakers, forums, and an executive roundtable that brings industry leaders together to discuss the rapid evolution of this technology.

“The world of flight is continually advancing and Oshkosh has been the site where innovations have been showcased for a half-century,” said Dave Chaimson, EAA’s vice president of marketing and business development. “Urban air mobility and the next wave of experimental aircraft are moving forward at a breathtaking rate, with ideas, investments and possibilities emerging that will change the way we transport ourselves. TransportUP’s support allows EAA to bring these technologies and concepts to the worldwide audience that attends AirVenture each year.”

The Urban Air Mobility Showcase is one of the four featured areas at EAA’s Aviation Gateway Park, which also encompasses the Aviation Innovation Showcase, the Education and Career Center, and the Park’s forum pavilion. The focus throughout Aviation Gateway Park is on innovation and possibilities within the world of flight.

“Oshkosh has long been synonymous with showcasing innovation and progress in aviation,” said Naish Gaubatz, Editor of TransportUP. “It’s the perfect place to introduce the exciting breakthroughs in Urban Air Mobility that are on the horizon, and given TransportUP’s close connection to this community, AirVenture is an ideal location for the support and showcase of this technology from new and existing aviation partners.”

Complete schedules of forums and activities, as well as participating companies, will be announced as they are finalized.

EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH 2019 CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF BOEING 747 JUMBO JET

Iconic airplane expanded international travel a half-century ago

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — (February 12, 2019) — The 50th anniversary of the Boeing 747, the iconic wide-body jetliner that has carried everything from heads of state to the space shuttle, will be celebrated at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2019. The 67th annual Experimental Aircraft Association fly-in convention is July 22-28 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

It is expected that several Boeing 747s will make an appearance at AirVenture during the week, with fly-bys and displays on AirVenture’s showcase Boeing Plaza. It will extend a legacy of the airplane’s appearances at Oshkosh that include jumbo jets from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, and Iceland in past years.

“There is probably no modern commercial airliner that is as well-known as the Boeing 747, with its distinctive hump at the front of the fuselage,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “For a half-century, the 747 has allowed people to reach destinations around the world in ways that were unimagined when commercial air travel began more than 80 years ago. We look forward to saluting that legacy in flight at the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration at Oshkosh this summer.”

The genesis of the Boeing 747 came in the mid-1960s, when Pan American Airlines founder Juan Trippe asked Boeing to design an aircraft that could meet the rising demand of air travel, which was outstripping the capacity of the Boeing 707s then commonly used for long-distance routes. The Boeing 747 made its maiden flight on February 9, 1969, and entered airline service less than a year later.

The airframe has been continually upgraded over the past 50 years to the current 747-8 model, which has been selected as the aircraft the U.S. government will use for the new Air Force One. The 747 is still widely used by airlines and carriers around the world and, according to Boeing, has carried roughly the equivalent of the world’s population as well as such unusual cargo as the space shuttle.

Specific aircraft and programs in conjunction with this anniversary will be announced as they are finalized.

DRONE SHOWS TO LIGHT UP THE SKIES OVER LAKELAND DURING SUN ‘n FUN

Posted on February 11, 2019 by Scott Smith

For Immediate Release

February 11, 2019

Lakeland, FL: You saw them at the Olympics, and most recently at the Super Bowl. Now, airshow fans at the annual SUN ‘n FUN International Fly-In and Expo in Lakeland can look forward to something special – the first public drone light show performance at a Florida airshow. Over 60 of the specialized aerial robots will lift off together, taking flight twice during the week-long event. SUN ‘n FUN organizers are confident that this dazzling multi-colored aerial light display set to music, dubbed the “Star Dance Spectacular,” will be one of this year’s most memorable highlights.

“Drones are the latest in aviation technology, and it’s exciting to have a display like this to showcase just one of the incredible uses for them,” said Greg Gibson, Airshow Director for SUN ‘n FUN. “A drone light show has been on the top of our request list from the fans, and we are very proud to bring this cutting-edge demonstration to our audiences.

The science behind the spectacle is even more impressive than the twinkling, shape-shifting scenes played out against the backdrop of night. It can take up to three months to program the complex interactions and movements of so many drones that must move simultaneously while accounting for wind, humidity, and other factors. Great Lakes Drone Company, who produces the exhibition, is one of only a very few companies in the world capable of putting on drone performances of this scale. SUN ‘n FUN’s Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE), their STEM-based education complex, provides the perfect venue for this type of 21st century presentation, and an exhibit area on the ground will be part of the overall experience for show-goers.

“SUN ‘n FUN is a world wonder of aerial entertainment, and we are honored to bring our technology to this legendary show,” said Matthew Quinn, president of Great Lakes Drone Company. “One of our key goals is to partner in communities to further aerospace education, and the award-winning programs at ACE is a perfect fit. Not only will we perform at SUN ’n FUN with our aerial night shows, but during the day we will feature STEM education in our exhibit and have a few other special surprises we can’t wait to announce in the weeks to come.”

The SUN ‘n FUN “Star Dance Spectacular” will take place during the night airshows that begin at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, April 3rd and Saturday, April 6th. The performance will be the closing act following a dazzling array of breathtaking performances and pyrotechnics by some of the world’s most renowned aerial artists.
