Canadian Snowbirds Return to AirVenture 2020

Posted on December 10, 2019 by Scott Smith

CANADIAN FORCES SNOWBIRDS RETURNING TO EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH IN 2020

Canadian Snowbirds – Renowned military flight team marks 50 years of performances next summer

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — (December 10, 2019) — The Canadian Forces Snowbirds, one of the most popular military aerial demonstration teams in the world, announced EAA AirVenture Oshkosh is part of its 50th year performance schedule in 2020, making Oshkosh a stop for the second time in five years. The announcement was officially made at the International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) convention in Las Vegas.

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the 68th annual Experimental Aircraft Association fly-in convention known as the “World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration,” is July 20-26 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The Snowbirds are currently scheduled to have a public practice session over the grounds on Friday, July 24, with full performances during the daily afternoon air show on Saturday and Sunday, July 25-26.

The Snowbirds, officially designated as 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, were created in 1971 and have a nearly 50-year connection to EAA, as they were the first military team to perform at Oshkosh when they flew over the EAA fly-in during the 1970s. They last appeared at AirVenture in 2016, which was their first performance there since 1983.

“There is an elegance in the Snowbirds’ aerial choreography that is matched by no other military demonstration group,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of programs, publications, and marketing, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “When they appeared at Oshkosh in 2016, the Snowbirds were warmly welcomed not only for their air show performances but for the way they interacted with our attendees, including some team members even camping with their jet on the show grounds. The Snowbirds’ return is just one more reason that EAA AirVenture 2020 will be an event to remember.”

The Snowbirds fly Canadair CT-114 Tutor jets in approximately 60 air shows each year. The nine aircraft used in the performances are piloted by experienced team members from the Royal Canadian Air Force. During the show, the pilots fly at speeds ranging from 110 to 465 mph (180 to 750 km/h) and in formation with distances as close as four feet of wing overlap. Comprised of exciting loops, rolls and solo passes as well as graceful nine-jet formations, the Snowbirds’ show includes more than 50 different formations and maneuvers over each 35-minute performance.

Posted on November 19, 2013 by Scott Smith

SUN ‘n FUN CAMPUS, LAKELAND, FL. – (November 19, 2013) – On Monday, November 25, 2013 at 10:10 a.m., U.S. Navy Lt. Commander Michael Cheng, Blue Angel #8, will arrive at the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport to conduct a pre-season briefing for the appearance of the United States Navy’s Flight Demonstration Squadron, the “Blue Angels” at the 40th Annual SUN ‘n FUN International Fly-In & Expo April 1-6, 2014.

A media briefing is scheduled for 10:20 a.m. at SUN ‘n FUN’s Florida Air Museum, 4175 Medulla Road, Lakeland, FL. rcules. Visit http://www.blueangels.navy.mil/ for more information about the Blue Angels.

I for one can’t wait for Sun N Fun.  If you haven’t been to one of the greatest airshows and flying events in the country you are missing out.

So what are you waiting for?  Get the map out, reserve a camp site or room and start practicing the flight to Florida on your simulator.

Don’t have a plane?  Check out airfares.  Rates are usually really good at that time of year. But don’t wait to long, its spring break so rooms fill up fast.

While you are at Sun N Fun, attend one of my buying an aircraft seminars so you can fly yourself to the event the next year.

Once you’ve been you have to go back.

Oh, and having ridden in Fat Albert once, makes the return of the Blue Angels even more exciting.

FLY WITH THE AEROSTARS IN A ONE-OF-A-KIND REDBIRD SIMULATOR
AirVenture visitors can fly formation with the Aerostars aerobatic team in Redbird’s custom-built Yak-52 simulator—and maybe the real airplane
Oshkosh, WI (July 24, 2013) – It takes years of practice to earn a spot in the daily airshow over Oshkosh, but this season visitors can experience formation flying for themselves using a Redbird MX2 simulator at AirVenture. This custom-built simulator replicates a Yakolev 52TW, the 450-horsepower, tailwheel version of the fully aerobatic Russian military trainer flown by the Aerostars. Visitors can just try on the Yak for fun, or experience what it’s like to fly formation in the Aerostars flight challenge.
The challenge starts on the runway at Oshkosh in the front seat of the Yak-52 belonging to Aerostars Right Wing Dave Monroe. Just ahead and to the left is the Yak-52 of Lead Pilot Harvey Meek. After takeoff, the visitor must hold position on Harvey’s right wing, while Dave supplies helpful hints as if he was riding along in the back seat. Completing the entire challenge requires holding position through several tight turns and landing back at Whitman Regional airport (Oshkosh).
Sennheiser Aviation has sweetened the deal even more: Everyone completing the challenge in the Yak-52 simulator is automatically entered into a drawing. Two winners, selected at random, will receive top-of-the-line Sennheiser PC350 gaming headsets. One grand-prize winner earns a flight in the real airplane.
In addition to the full-motion experience of the Yak-52 cockpit at the Redbird tent, the challenge can be practiced on any Redbird Jay desktop simulator. These are located at the AOPA tent (#195), the Redbird Flight Simulations tent (#208), or the Aerostars trailer right off Phillips 66 Square.
Team Aerostar will be available in person at the Redbird tent Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 1–2 p.m. The prize drawing will be at the Redbird tent on Saturday, August 3 at 2 p.m.
