EAA TEAMING WITH MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR TO PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS, EDUCATION RESOURCES

Students, EAA chapters to benefit with newest version of Microsoft Flight Simulator

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — (November 19, 2020) — The Experimental Aircraft Association and Microsoft are teaming to provide flight training scholarships and education resources throughout the country in conjunction with the release of the new edition of the legendary Microsoft Flight Simulator software.

EAA and Microsoft have committed to establishing three Microsoft Flight Simulator Scholarships for each of the next three years, giving young aviation enthusiasts the opportunity to move from virtual flight via simulators to the real thing. In addition, Microsoft will provide copies of the new Microsoft Flight Simulator to EAA’s current youth flight training scholarship recipients, including the Ray Aviation Scholarship students, for the next three years as well as offer discounts on the new edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator to all EAA members.

“Microsoft Flight Simulator has given countless people the experience of virtual flight over the past four decades, and we know many pilots today got their starts with Microsoft Flight Simulator and have used it to keep their skills sharp when they can’t be in the cockpit themselves,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programming. “Teaming with Microsoft to provide the newest version of Microsoft Flight Simulator to our EAA community opens wonderful possibilities, especially when it’s teamed with actual flight training scholarships for young people. EAA members also have a unique opportunity to save on purchasing their own copy of the newest Microsoft Flight Simulator software.”

Along with the youth outreach, Microsoft will be supplying a limited number of Microsoft Flight Simulator copies to EAA chapters that have facilities to use it as part of pilot training and proficiency. This outreach will be administered through the EAA chapter office.

“We are very excited to partner with the EAA. Their passion for aviation is unmatched and their focus on inspiring the next generation of pilots via the Young Eagles program is a perfect real-world counterpart to what we hope to achieve with our new Microsoft Flight Simulator,” said Jorg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator. “The newly established Microsoft Flight Simulator scholarships are a great way to engage with the EAA community and we hope to attend Oshkosh 2021 to further show our commitment to aviation and the EAA community.”

EAA and Microsoft have teamed on various projects over the past 30 years, including exclusive software that recreated the Wright brothers’ first flights at Kitty Hawk as part of EAA’s Countdown to Kitty Hawk project in 2003 that celebrated the centennial of powered flight.

Simulator or stimulator

Posted on January 23, 2014 by Scott Smith
I’ve always felt that flying was very stimulating.  I think that most pilots feel the same way.  It brings out another side to the personality that a pilot craves.  And one way to fulfill that desire is to use a PC Simulator.  One of the simulator programs that I have is the Microsoft Flight Simulator Professional.  I know there are other systems, but I have had this for years and it has always worked great.
This version offers me a chance to actually download weather from the Internet and overlay it in the simulation I’m in.  Another neat thing is that I can use the simulator program to pick a city and plan a cross country flight, before I make the flight.  And many times the airport in the simulation has many of the topographical things to give me a perspective of the area.  No, it is not the same as being there.  But I’m not there!  I’m pretending to be there.  And that makes it fun.  I can pretend to be almost anywhere.  And I can fly aircraft I don’t own or can’t fly in real life.  My desire has never been to fly an airline, but I can, on the simulator.
And if I want, I can make the flight, shoot a couple of approaches (and I’m not even instrument rated) and be prepared for the trip.  It’s a rehearsal for the actual flight.  And the old line “practice makes perfect” has never been more accurate than in aviation.  The more you fly the better it is.  And that doesn’t mean just flying in an aircraft.
Want more?  There are lots of extras in today’s flight simulators such as real time weather, lots of cool visual effects and quite an assortment of airplanes.  One of which is my dream aircraft, the Cessna Caravan on amphibious floats.  I have always felt that the Caravan on amphib’s could replace a fifth wheel travel trailer, a testosterone filled truck and my airplane.
It could be a flying motor home…although I don’t foresee owning one in the near future.  Now that I think about it, I don’t foresee owning one in the distant future either.  Not unless all of you readers want to contribute to the “SkySmith, I want to own a Caravan on amphib’s fund”.  But until then, I’ll be stuck flying the computer version.  Which really isn’t too bad.  I was able to fly to a lake, land and see the wave’s splash around the floats while I taxied to the dock.
And when it came time to refuel…I shut the program off and didn’t have to worry about paying for the hundreds of gallons of fuel that I burned during the flight.  My Discover card thanked me.  Kind of a nice thought.

FLY WITH THE AEROSTARS IN A ONE-OF-A-KIND REDBIRD SIMULATOR
AirVenture visitors can fly formation with the Aerostars aerobatic team in Redbird’s custom-built Yak-52 simulator—and maybe the real airplane
Oshkosh, WI (July 24, 2013) – It takes years of practice to earn a spot in the daily airshow over Oshkosh, but this season visitors can experience formation flying for themselves using a Redbird MX2 simulator at AirVenture. This custom-built simulator replicates a Yakolev 52TW, the 450-horsepower, tailwheel version of the fully aerobatic Russian military trainer flown by the Aerostars. Visitors can just try on the Yak for fun, or experience what it’s like to fly formation in the Aerostars flight challenge.
The challenge starts on the runway at Oshkosh in the front seat of the Yak-52 belonging to Aerostars Right Wing Dave Monroe. Just ahead and to the left is the Yak-52 of Lead Pilot Harvey Meek. After takeoff, the visitor must hold position on Harvey’s right wing, while Dave supplies helpful hints as if he was riding along in the back seat. Completing the entire challenge requires holding position through several tight turns and landing back at Whitman Regional airport (Oshkosh).
Sennheiser Aviation has sweetened the deal even more: Everyone completing the challenge in the Yak-52 simulator is automatically entered into a drawing. Two winners, selected at random, will receive top-of-the-line Sennheiser PC350 gaming headsets. One grand-prize winner earns a flight in the real airplane.
In addition to the full-motion experience of the Yak-52 cockpit at the Redbird tent, the challenge can be practiced on any Redbird Jay desktop simulator. These are located at the AOPA tent (#195), the Redbird Flight Simulations tent (#208), or the Aerostars trailer right off Phillips 66 Square.
Team Aerostar will be available in person at the Redbird tent Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 1–2 p.m. The prize drawing will be at the Redbird tent on Saturday, August 3 at 2 p.m.
